7 Best Cat Themed Games

Any cat lovers out there? Our furry friends can be comforting, energetic, or downright ornery. Our resident house cat, Charlie, is our resident cranky, “get off my lawn” feline, but we love his quirky ways. Watching Charlie loaf on the sofa, I thought I’d compile a list of purr-fectly entertaining options for cat lovers. No matter what kind of game strikes your fancy, there’s a cat-themed game just for you. I’ve rounded up a few favorites and a couple of others that are on my Amazon wish list.

Boop

Boop is a delightful 2-player game where cats jump on a bed, depicted by a six-by-six grid. Each player starts with eight kittens. When you place a kitten on the bed, it “boops” all adjacent kittens one space away (if there’s room). If a player manages to get three kittens in a row, those pieces upgrade to cats. Cats are immune to being booped by kittens but can be booped by other cats. The first player to get three cats in a row wins the game. Easy to learn for even non-gamer, Boop offers enough strategy to keep kids and adults entertained. Not to mention the little cat and kitten pieces are adorable!

Calico

Do you and your favorite feline like to snuggle under the quilt together? Or is your kitty a blanket hog? Either way, you’re likely to enjoy Calico. In Calico, players compete to create their coziest quilt by drafting and placing patchwork hexagons on your quilt. Buttons, patterns and color combinations and placement of cats contribute to your score. Great for those who love puzz-ly type of games. Plus the completed board is so pretty and inviting-you might have shoo your cat away from curling up on your newly designed tapestry!

Cat in the Box

Any trick takers out there? Cat in the Box is the game for you. As a fun twist, YOU decide the color of your cards for that round. Upon being dealt your number cards, decide how many tricks you hope to take and record your bid. Play continues until all cards have been played or someone can’t play. Plan carefully as you can’t claim the color of a card with the same number that has already been declared. A colorful board with cute tokens round out the box of contents. A game the cool cats will enjoy!

Cat Lady

Ready to play the role of cat lady? You and your fellow group will collect toys, food, catnip, costumes for your loveable cats. But as in real life, a lack of food will make for verty unhappy pets. Simple game mechanisms make this easy to teach and enjoyable to play. The lightweight Cat Lady often makes it in our game routine often as a break between the heavier weight games.

MLEM: Space Agency

Welcome to {{Insert echo-y voice here}} CATS in SPAAACCCEE! It’s the year 2075. Cats have set their sights on new territory, space! However, the lack of opposing thumbs make for some chaotic cat-astrophes. Your catstronauts embark on a expedition via a space ship. Rolling the dice move the ship along the track, maneuvering among moons and planets, hopefully avoiding crashing. Luck and a little bit of strategy is all you need. Fun cat-in-space theme sure to please your cat friendly gamers.

The Isle of Cats

The Isle of Cats is the heaviest weight game in the group, but don’t let that deter you. Because it has two modes, easy and regular, it works for both beginner and advanced gamers. As citizens of Squall’s End on a rescue mission, you must strategically load your rescued cats onto your boat. Cats are represented by a unique tile and belong to a family, and you must find a way to make them all fit while keeping families together, in order to accrue the most points. Also can be played in solo mode, The Isle of Cats is an enjoyable Tetris-type board game.

Exploding Kittens

I hesitated listing Exploding Kittens here, not because it’s not a good game (this was one of my family night go to with pre-teens) but because I wanted to introduce newer games. However, our cards are so beat up from so much play-time, I couldn’t leave it out. Exploding Kittens is silly, fun, and the card art is very entertaining. Touted as a ‘card game for people who are into kittens and explosions and laser beams and sometimes goats’, game-play is as simple as draw cards, take action, and don’t get blown up before the other cats do. While my little people are no longer little, it’s still brought out from time to time. If you’re looking for a silly game to play with your crew, Exploding Kittens should be on your game must have list.

So what kind of games do you and your feline lovin’ friends enjoy? Leave a note below-I’d love to try them out!
